FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask most. Each answer links to the page with the details.

Credits and subscriptions

I connected my Codex subscription. Why am I out of credits?

Your subscription pays for model tokens, not for the cloud machine. Machine time, generated images, and reviews bill your organization's Capy balance, so an empty balance stops the thread with Your organization is out of credits. Add balance, pick a plan, or run the thread on your own computer. See what uses Capy credits.

What does a connected subscription or API key cover?

Model tokens for the models it serves, and nothing else. Usage on a subscription counts against that plan's limits, and usage on a key is billed by the provider. See connections.

Why did my thread use Capy credits instead of my subscription?

The model isn't in your subscription's plan, the subscription was used up, or the thread belongs to someone else and runs on their connections. In the model picker, no icon means Capy credits. See keep a model on your subscription.

Can I use Capy with only my subscription, without paying?

Yes, on your own computer. A thread that runs there through the desktop app has no machine time, so a model on your subscription costs nothing from your balance. A cloud thread needs a balance. See run on a subscription without credits.

Do Captains, subagents, automations, and reviews use credits?

Yes. Captains, crew threads, subagents on their own machines, and automation runs bill machine time on a cloud machine. Reviews bill Capy credits for the model and the machine, never your subscriptions or keys. See what uses Capy credits.

Which subscriptions can I connect? Can I connect my Claude subscription?

You can connect Codex, GitHub Copilot, and SuperGrok in Settings → Models. A Claude subscription can't be connected, so run Claude models on an Anthropic API key or on Capy credits. See subscriptions.

Can I connect more than one Codex account?

Yes. Codex and SuperGrok show Add another in the Add menu, and a thread uses the accounts in the order you set. GitHub Copilot takes one account per person, and each teammate connects their own subscriptions. See subscriptions.

What happens when my subscription runs out in the middle of a thread?

By default the thread moves to your next subscription or key with a note, and asks before it uses Capy credits. Your organization can change this to always ask, or to keep going on Capy credits. See when a subscription or key runs out.

Why does Capy say my subscription is used up after it reset?

Refresh usage and plan in Models settings updates the subscription's meter. Try … now on a stopped thread's card retries it immediately. See when a subscription or key runs out.

My subscription ran out and my threads stopped. Do I have to switch each one?

No. A thread keeps its model and uses any new subscription or key that serves it on your next message. If nothing you connected serves the model, pick another one in the thread's model picker. See when a subscription or key runs out.

Whose subscription does a thread use when a teammate or Slack starts it?

Its owner's, even when a teammate writes in it. Link your Slack account in Settings → Integrations → Slack so threads you start from Slack belong to you. The owner can hand a thread over with Transfer ownership in its share dialog. See keep a model on your subscription.

Why does a free model ask me to buy a plan?

A cloud thread pays for machine time in Capy credits, even when the model is free or runs on your subscription. Add balance or pick a plan, ask an admin, or run the thread on your own computer. See what uses Capy credits.

Your own API keys

Which plan do I need to add my own API key?

Any plan, starting with Lite. API keys, gateways like OpenRouter, coding plans, and custom endpoints all need a plan, and the Add menu marks them with the plan they need. Subscriptions like Codex don't need a plan. See plans.

Is my key just for me, or for the whole organization?

It depends on where you add it. A key under Your connections serves threads you own. A key an admin adds under Organization connections serves every member's threads after their own connections. See connections.

Can I use OpenRouter, a gateway, or my own endpoint?

Yes. The Add menu lists gateways such as OpenRouter, Vercel AI Gateway, and Cloudflare AI Gateway, plus Custom endpoint for any OpenAI-compatible server. You can add a custom endpoint's models by id, even if Capy's catalog doesn't list them. See connections.

Does my endpoint need a public URL?

Yes. Capy calls your endpoint from the cloud, so the base URL must be a public https hostname, not localhost or an IP address. A tunnel such as Cloudflare Tunnel works. See troubleshooting.

Plans and billing

Is there a free trial?

Monthly Capy Lite costs $1 for your first 7 days with a verified card, then $20 a month unless you cancel. Each card and each organization gets one trial. See plans.

Can I use Capy without a plan?

Yes. You can add balance directly, at least $5. See plans.

Is there an annual plan?

Yes. Annual billing charges 12 months upfront at 20% off and still grants credits monthly. See plans.

Do you mark up model prices?

No. Models on Capy credits cost each provider's list price, shown per token in the models table. Usage on your own subscription or key doesn't bill model tokens to your balance.

Does a bigger plan make my credits last longer?

No. Higher plans grant more credits each month, with a bonus of 5% on Pro and 10% on Max, and allow bigger machines. How fast credits go depends on your models and your machine size, which you set per project. See plans and machine pricing.

Is a plan per person or per organization?

Per organization. Every member draws from one balance, and there is no price per member. See unlimited members.

Why does Capy still ask me to choose a plan after I paid?

A plan belongs to one organization, so check that you're in the organization you paid for. Then reload the page, because the app can take up to a minute to see a new plan. See billing.

How do I cancel?

Cancel plan on the billing page ends renewal. Your plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for. The same page switches plans right away, with a prorated charge if one applies. See change or cancel a plan.

Does deleting my account cancel my plan?

No. The plan belongs to the organization. Cancel the plan first, or delete the organization. See billing.

Where do my promo or deal credits show up?

In Credit sources on the billing page, as Credit grant, with the amount left and the expiry date. A source with nothing left drops off the list. Credits go to the organization you picked when you claimed them. See billing.

Where are my invoices and receipts?

Billing activity on the billing page lists every invoice. Turn on Email receipts to get a receipt by email after each payment. See billing.

Is there free usage for open-source projects?

Capy can sponsor an allowance for approved projects. Contact us to ask. See sponsored allowance.

Where can I see what used my credits?

Settings → Org → Usage splits spend into Capy credits and subscriptions and keys, per member, model, and thread. Each thread's cost breakdown shows its own machine, model, and image spend. See usage monitoring.

Machines

Can I get a macOS, Windows, or iOS machine?

No. Cloud machines run Linux only. To build or test on macOS or the iOS Simulator, run the thread on your Mac with the desktop app.

Where do cloud machines run?

In US East (New York). Each machine is a Firecracker microVM with its own kernel, memory, and disk, isolated from other customers' machines. See specs.

How many machines can run at once?

Your plan caps the memory of your awake cloud machines at 128 GB on Lite, 512 GB on Pro, and 1 TB on Max. That's 8, 32, or 64 Large machines. See plan limits.

How do I get more machine memory?

Upgrade your plan. Higher plans allow bigger machine sizes and more memory across running machines. On Max or Enterprise, contact support with the limit you need. See plan limits.

Can I SSH into a machine?

No. The thread pane's + menu provides a shell and the machine's desktop instead. See machines.

Can I run Docker?

Yes, and the daemon starts on first use. Containers stop when the machine sleeps, so start the ones you always need in your startup entries. See preinstalled tools.

Can a machine use OIDC to reach AWS or another cloud?

No. Machines have no cloud-provider identity. Store credentials as secrets, which Capy writes into the machine's environment at boot. See network access.

Why did I lose my uncommitted changes?

Capy rebuilds a machine it can't resume, for example after 30 days of sleep, and anything you didn't push or save to Drive is gone. Ask the agent to push at milestones, and turn on snapshots. See sleep.

Threads and messages

Does Capy have a plan mode?

No. Ask for one in your message, such as "write a spec and wait for my go-ahead", and the agent stops until you reply. To always get a plan first, add that request to your instructions. See ask for a plan first.

When does a model change take effect?

When the agent reads your next message. Picking a model sends nothing on its own. To change a subagent's model, ask the thread's agent to switch it. See subagent models.

What happens when I edit a message I already sent?

The conversation rewinds to that message, but the machine doesn't. File changes, commits, and branches made after it stay, and the agent is told so. See send and steer messages.

How do I find a thread that isn't in my sidebar?

Press Cmd/Ctrl+K and search titles and messages, or type the thread's code. The sidebar hides archived threads, automation runs, and threads you never started, wrote in, or were mentioned in. See find a thread.

Can I move a thread to another project?

No. Start a new thread in the right project and type @ to mention the old one, so Capy can read it. See move between projects.

Does archiving a thread close its pull requests?

No. The pull requests stay open, but their events no longer wake the thread. Send a message to unarchive it, and the agent wakes with everything that arrived. See archive a thread.

Why does Capy keep asking for permission?

Your instructions override Capy's defaults, so an instruction or imported skill that says to ask makes it keep asking. Ask Capy which of your instructions conflict with how it works in the cloud. See set standing instructions.

Pull requests and GitHub

Can I let Capy merge without asking?

No. Capy merges only when you ask for that merge in the thread, and no instruction gives it standing permission. To merge when checks pass, use Enable auto-merge. See merge from Capy.

How do I find the Capy thread for a pull request?

Cmd/Ctrl+K finds a pull request by number or branch name. Its Thread field links to the Capy thread. Every pull request also has a page at https://capy.ai/pull/<owner>/<repo>/<number>. See find the thread from GitHub.

Why didn't a merge or conflict wake my thread?

These events wake a thread only if someone wrote in it within the Merge-conflict max thread age, 3 days by default. Older threads get the update as context, and archived threads never wake. See events that wake the thread.

Can Capy act on feedback from review bots?

Yes. Add the bot to the Bot list and set Review bot feedback to React or Keep as context. Capy ignores every other bot. See events that wake the thread.

Can Capy push to a contributor's fork?

Not from a cloud machine, so ask Capy to open its own pull request from a branch in your repository. On your computer, Capy uses your git credentials and can push if the contributor allows edits from maintainers. See pull requests from forks.

Can Capy work on an open-source repository I don't own?

Yes. Fork it into an account that has the Capy GitHub App, add the fork to a project, and let Capy push there. Then open the pull request to the upstream repository from GitHub. See connect GitHub.

Why can't Capy push to a repository?

No Capy GitHub App installation covers it. Install the app on the account that owns the repository. See connect GitHub.

Does each @capy mention start a new thread?

No. Every mention on a pull request goes to the same thread as a new message. See talk to Capy on GitHub.

Why do comments I make in Capy post as Capy?

Your GitHub account isn't connected. Connect it in Settings → Integrations → GitHub to post under your own name. See merge from Capy.

Captains

When should I use a Captain instead of a thread?

Start with a thread. Promote it to a Captain when you keep asking it to start other threads, or want one place to see the work across them. See Captains.

Can I turn a Captain back into a thread?

Yes. The owner stops it if it's working, then chooses Demote to thread. The thread keeps its history and pull requests, and its crew threads go back to your thread list. See demote or delete a Captain.

Can a Captain work across projects?

A Captain starts crew threads only in its own project, so use one Captain per project. It can message other Captains, and read threads in any project that everyone on the Captain can see. See projects and machines.

Does a Captain forget things in a long conversation?

The Captain rereads its plan, rules, and crew state each time it wakes. Ask it to write down anything that must last, as a rule or a note. See Captain Drive.

Desktop and mobile

Is there a mobile app?

No. Open capy.ai in your phone's browser to follow threads and review pull requests. On an iPhone or iPad, add it to your Home Screen from Safari to get push notifications. See follow threads remotely.

How do I update the desktop app?

Choose Update in the tab bar or Restart to update in your account menu. If that fails, install the current version from the download page over the old one. Your threads and settings stay. See desktop app.

Why is the window blank on macOS?

You probably opened Capy from the disk image. Quit Capy, drag it to your Applications folder, and open it from there. See macOS.

Can I run the desktop app on a headless server?

No. A computer needs a desktop session to be a device. To let cloud machines reach private services on your network, use Tailscale. See install the app.

Why does a thread work on my computer but fail in the cloud?

A thread on your computer uses the tools, credentials, and services already there. Give cloud machines the same with your project's environment and secrets.

What happens when my computer goes offline?

The thread doesn't fail, and steps that don't touch the computer, such as replying to you, still run. With Cloud checkpoints on, the default, you can move the thread to the cloud. See sleep and offline.

Why does my device show as offline?

The app must be running and signed in on that computer. On Windows and Linux, closing the window quits the app unless Show in system tray is on. If Settings → Devices asks for an update, update the app. See sleep and offline.

How do I keep a thread running overnight?

Turn on Keep awake while agents are running for the device in Settings → Devices. On a Mac on AC power, it stops sleep even with the lid closed. See desktop app.

Why does Capy ask to use my computer?

A thread that started in the cloud or on another device asks the first time it runs a command there. Always allow lets every thread of yours use the device without asking. See devices.

Can teammates use my computer?

Only if you set the device's Access to Shared in Settings → Devices. Their threads then run with your git identity and credentials, so share it only with people you'd hand your terminal to. See devices.

Where are the desktop app logs?

In ~/Library/Application Support/Capy/logs on macOS, %APPDATA%\Capy\logs on Windows, and ~/.config/Capy/logs on Linux. Attach desktop.log when you contact support.

Skills, MCP, and plugins

Why doesn't Capy find my skill?

A repository skill's SKILL.md needs name and description in its frontmatter, directly under .agents/skills/ or .claude/skills/ on the thread's branch. Type $ in the message box to see the skills Capy found. See skills.

Should I use a skill or AGENTS.md?

Use AGENTS.md for rules that apply to every task. Use a skill for a workflow Capy loads only when a task needs it. See skills.

Can I use my skills and MCP servers from Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor?

Copy each skill folder into .agents/skills/ and commit it, and import MCP servers in Settings → MCP & plugins. The desktop app can also import your local Codex and Claude Code sessions. See repository skills and import MCP servers.

Why is an MCP server missing from my thread?

Check the server's status in Settings → MCP & plugins, because a server that needs a connection gives threads no tools. Also check its Enabled switch, and if it's set to one project, that it's the thread's project. See statuses and fixes.

Can each person sign in to an MCP server with their own account?

Yes. An organization server shares one connection, so each member can add the server as Only you instead. See per-person sign-in.

Can Capy reach an MCP server on my private network?

Yes, through Tailscale. HTTP servers need a public HTTPS URL. Run the server, or a bridge such as npx -y mcp-remote <url>, as a STDIO server on the thread's machine. See run a local STDIO server.

Should I use a plugin or an integration?

Use an integration in Settings → Integrations when one exists, such as GitHub, Slack, Linear, Paper, Revyl, or Tailscale. Integrations do more than add tools, for example starting threads from Slack or Linear. Otherwise add a marketplace plugin, or add the service's MCP server yourself. See plugins.

Can I use plugins built for Claude Code, Codex, or Grok?

Yes. Capy reads their plugin.json manifests and uses their MCP servers and skills. It ignores hooks. See build a plugin.

How do I roll back a plugin?

Roll back returns a plugin to the version you ran before. If that version needs new keys or OAuth scopes, the rollback waits for your review. See updates and removal.

Why do I get a 403 when I connect a plugin?

The service refused Capy's sign-in. Some services accept only MCP clients they approved, or need Capy's redirect URI on an allowlist. See missing permissions or a 403.

Security and data

Is Capy SOC 2 compliant?

Yes, SOC 2 Type II. Request the report from the Trust Center. See compliance.

Does Capy train models on my code?

No. Capy doesn't train its models on your non-public code, messages, or files unless you opt in or agree in writing. See compliance.

Can I sign a DPA?

The Data Processing Addendum in the Terms of Service covers business customers. For a separate agreement, book a call.

Do you offer zero data retention?

Yes, for Capy's own storage on Enterprise plans. Book a call to set it up. On your own API key or subscription, your provider's terms apply. See model providers.

Can I run Capy in my own cloud?

Yes, on Enterprise plans. Book a call to discuss it. See compliance.

What IP addresses does Capy use?

Capy doesn't publish its egress IP addresses. Contact us for the list before you turn on an IP allow list. See compliance.

Where are threads on my computer stored?

Your files stay on your disk. The thread's messages and tool output are stored in Capy's cloud, so the same thread opens in the web app, the desktop app, and Slack. See your data.

How long does Capy keep deleted data?

Capy purges deleted data from storage and backups within 30 days. To request a full purge of your data, email support@capy.ai. See delete your data.

Can I restore a deleted organization?

Yes, until Capy purges it within 30 days. An owner restores it from Deleted organizations in Settings → Profile. Paid subscriptions stay canceled, and you reconnect Slack and Linear. See delete your data.

Can I export my threads?

There's no export button. Use the List threads and List thread messages endpoints with an API key from Settings → API that acts as you. A service user's key sees only shared threads.

How do I start a private thread?

Before sending, use /private or set Access to Only specific people. Admins set whether new work starts shared or private in Settings → Organization → General. See make work private.

How do I transfer a thread, Captain, or project?

Transfer ownership in the share dialog changes the owner. Share a private thread or Captain with the new owner first. See who can see what.

What happens to work from a member who left?

An admin can move their private work from Inactive in Settings → Members with Transfer. For a private project, an admin picks a new owner with Set owner in Settings → Projects. See who can see what.
